St. Margaret of Scotland has had a community garden since 2016. We currently have 25 garden beds, 3 of which are wheelchair/walker accessible. Gardeners represent a rich mix of parishioners, neighbours, non-profit organizations and a dedicated Food Bank bed that is tended by the Community Garden Committee with produce delivered weekly to a local food bank during the growing season.
A committee comprised of parishioners and gardeners oversees the safety and maintenance of the garden and organizes two gatherings a year that bring everyone together for food, fellowship and sometimes a work project or two, building a community of gardeners, neighbours and parishioners who have become friends.
The garden has a close relationship with our next door neighbour, the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Leeds Street campus. NSCC has, among numerous projects, helped build all 25 garden beds, designed and built a watering system for the garden that relies on water runoff from the church roof, designed and provided two outdoor signs identifying the space as The St. Margaret of Scotland Community Garden, and helped install a remote water tap in the area of the accessible garden beds facilitating watering for those using walkers and wheelchairs. It has been an excellent partnership and one that we hope will continue and flourish.
Currently all beds are subscribed but we do maintain a waiting list. For more information contact St. Margaret of Scotland church at 902-455-2451 or email st.mofs@gmail.com
